Jim Jarmusch

While I was away in Amsterdam, I found myself taking a lot of inspiration from the Jim Jarmusch film 'Permanent Vacation' which is about a kid that just drifts through New York City, he spends a lot of time confused and feeling alone with emotions. I instantly felt like Charles (the boy the film is based around). I felt a connection between me and his situation. I was drifting through a city without my parents for the first time, I entered Amsterdam with no structure towards my next four days there. The reason I have decided to delve into 'Permanent Vacation' is because not only do I feel like I have a connection with the film but this production is still highly linked with my theme, sentimental nostalgia, the whole movie was shot on film in a city of a boy growing up. This boy was going through adolescence which I am trying to capture in my experimentations and hopefully going to capture in my final piece.

I brought a disposable film camera with me and carried it in my pocket the whole time so that I could capture photographs instantly as I had my camera on the move. As we drifted around the city of Amsterdam I started to feel a slight romance with the city, everything started to become beautiful. The perfectness inside nothingness made me appreciate the trip. I decided to take photographs of my friend Stanley a lot of the time with the different backgrounds we visited to show our journey just like Charles in New York, I wanted to capture our journey of adolescence through our first trip without our parents. I decided to take a disposable as it allows me to capture 27 shots, this limited me to how I captured the trip and what photographs I wanted to leave with so I had to make each one count.

Besides Jim Jarmusch not being a photographer and being a director, I really wanted to portray his meanings and emotions into my own work. Jarmusch's work really connected with me and I felt I had a relationship between my work and his while shooting some of my photographs, I am happy with how these photographs turned out as I felt I captured many emotions we feel throughout adolescence. Such as; confusion, dullness, happiness, bleakness, misbehaving etc. As you can see in some of these images my friend Stan either looks really happy and messing about or he is misbehaving on his hired bicycle, stood there staring down the lens of my camera or smoking.

Jack Marshall

This piece was created by Jack Marshall, brothers with the famous Archy Marshall from King Krule. This piece of art was created for his brothers album 6 Feet Beneath The Moon, which was an album pinned down to feeling abstract and out of it all. This art fits perfectly with the album genre, moods and aesthetic as it was created purely down to involving Archy beneath the moon and being abstract, they have created it so that all these differed shapes as sizes build up the image together as one, creating.

I have chosen to look at Jacks work as he creates very deep meaningful, abstract art. I want to study more abstract art/photography and maybe portray this into my own photographs/style. It creates a very out of body feeling of the abstract was created properly and is strong enough, in such a way it makes you rethink creativity and life. Jack subjects all of his work on specific meanings and why it was created, some artists create work and pretend that their work has a meaning but Jack makes sure he has his ideas pinned before the art, during the art and after. This makes Jacks work more creative and powerful to analyse/view.

Jack and his brother Archy work perfectly together as they are both hugely creative in two different ways, this has a massive part to play when it comes to getting ready to having to create something new as they both work together, for example when Archy is ready to release new music such and EPs and Singles, his brother will have handfuls of copies of the same piece he has created yet different, this allows Archy to choose his favourite out of all the abstract work he has been given to look from.

Jack Marshall also takes photographs of King Krule on a 25mm film camera, this makes the images he takes of his brother look very gritty which fits the mood of a punk/gritty artist and really shows his identity as well as whatever he is doing while the photograph is being taken. These are both young artists between 25-27, they started music and art from the ages 7 while arch was playing Glastonbury at 14.

I have selected these artists/photographers as these all have their own take on documentary photography and art, the sweet side but story telling side of Hockney’s cubism, to the depths of darkness in Man Rays distortion side of documentary.  These photographers relate to my work and interests as I like distorted/dark meaningful photographer and I am also hugely inspired by Jack Marshalls art, he takes images and then draws over them with little doodles, for example he will take an image of someone and draw a line over their eyes to cover their identity but such a simplistic form of art and photography put together creates a really gloomy and bleak image. But mostly they have influenced me again through.

The photography techniques used in this photograph are this such as a high angle, this connotes the man isn't worth much, very looked down upon, he is a very working class and unfortunate man. The composition used in this photograph is clear that he has been placed almost centre in a junk yard/scrap yard full or rust and old gear, this shows the man is very poor and unhealthy as he is also smoking a cigarette. The shot type is a medium shot, taken in landscape to capture the background of this mine and life. I have chosen to write about this photograph as it is documenting this man in a very deep way, this photograph denotes a man sat on an old rugged chair in what looks like a scrap yard, this connotes the man is living a very cheap life but making it work and smoking his cigarettes as an escape from life and the stress brought upon him.
